Oral health is so integral for the well-being of our body. Bacterial infections caused by poor oral hygiene can cause gum disease and lead to missing teeth. Missing teeth can cause a variety of oral ailments such as depletion of jawbone, loss in oral function, bad breath, and the loosening of surrounding teeth. Missing teeth causes issues to both oral health and the aesthetics of your teeth. For dental implant patients, missing teeth have caused many difficulties and prevented them from having the ability to eat certain foods and caused embarrassment about the condition of their smile.
Natural cures are becoming more popular because they provide a solution that lasts and not one that just mitigates temporarily. Natural remedies have been used since the dawn of time and these old ancient practices helped cure and prevent illnesses.
Whole grains- A study from MacMaster University Canada found that men who ate at least 3 servings were 23% less likely to have periodontal disease. In diabetics, eating whole grains has proved to help stabilize blood sugar levels.
Green tea- Green tea is well known for its antioxidant properties and cleansing properties. It is an anti-inflammatory that prevents tooth loss and prevents bad breath.
Herbal remedies- Neem twigs are used a natural toothbrush in countries such as India. The neem twig is known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties. A study shows that neem was more effective in preventing gum disease than mouthwash. Holy basil or tulsi is a natural antibiotic that can help protect against bleeding gums and the whiteness of teeth. It can also help prevent dental plaque buildup and elimates bad breath odor as well.
Water- The single most important substance on earth is also beneficial for our oral anatomies. In addition to our bodies being made up of predominantly water, it can help produce more saliva in our mouths. Saliva is such an important tool that our body makes and uses it to maintain oral hygiene. Saliva will rinse off any excess food debris left behind from your meals and it will also balance out acids that can damage your teeth and allow plaque to build up.
Vitamin C- Oranges, lime, lemons, and kiwi’s will help kill bacteria from its acidity, but be careful to not overuse citrus because too much can actually damage your enamel and stain your teeth.
Apples- Stimulates saliva and rinses the mouth of food particles, but it also is high in many nutritional vitamins that will help keep our bodies strong. The saying an apple a day will keep the doctor away is still a very true statement.
Mint- Eating mint raw can aid in bad breath issues and also has high nutritional values.
Cloves- Cloves can be put in tea to help alleviate toothache.
Fennel seeds- In Indian cuisine, fennel seeds are often used in meals and eaten in between and after meals. This is because fennel seeds clear the palate and helps with bad breath.
Cardamon- Aids in freshening breath.
