Dr. Cooper is here blogging today to explain the different kinds of tooth corrosion and how dental implants can help to replace these unhealthy teeth. There are so many different ways that we can damage and harm our teeth unfortunately, even just by drinking or eating. However, we must do our best to avoid these and clean our teeth as much as possible after consuming them. There are different names for tooth damage, depending on the substances used to abuse teeth and the way it is done. The three different kinds of damage are: erosion, attrition, and abrasion.
Abrasion is known as the loss of teeth due to abuse from mechanical actions like brushing teeth or using teeth to open objects. When brushing teeth the incorrect way, we can ruin our enamel which will lead to more tooth decay and eventually gum disease. Check your toothpaste to see how much fluoride it contains; the amount of fluoride in it can directly affect how hard it is wearing on your teeth. Abrasions on teeth are common and hard to avoid; there are many harmful substances that are teeth come across that have negative effects on their appearance.
Attrition is the loss of teeth due to excessive grinding and mastication. Depending on how tough the foods and substances we are chewing are, they can cause chips and “bruises” on our teeth that can lead to worse tooth destruction. Someone suffering from bruxism, or teeth grinding, is definitely going to be a victim of attrition. The best solution for this, if you catch it early on, is a night guard to help protect your teeth from being destroyed.
Erosion of teeth is the worst type of ruination because it is due to the chemical and acidic exposure that forms when the bacteria in the mouth mixes with the acidic meals and drinks we ingest. Soda is definitely a contributor in the erosion of our teeth because of the toxic chemicals it contains, along with fruit juice that has a high acidity content. Anything that is high in acidic measure is going to be bad for our teeth and our overall dental hygiene. Another thing that hurts our teeth, in these kinds of drinks, is the sugar in them; this depletes our salivary gland which causes our mouth to be more susceptible to bacterial infection.
No matter what kind of wear you have on your teeth, your overall dental hygiene could be at risk if this is not treated. If your teeth are worn down from any of these substances, or worse, and you cannot salvage what is left of them; consider getting dental implants. Dental implants can help by replacing dead or unhealthy teeth or replacing the missing ones.
