Dr. Cooper is blogging today from San Jose, CA to explain which candies are the worst for our teeth and how dental implants can help people who neglect to clean their mouths after eating these delicious treats. There is a reason that your parents limited the amount of candy you could eat when you were little, candy is one of the worst things in the world for our teeth. It can be sticky, hard, sweet, sour; it does not matter, it can destroy even the best oral hygiene if we neglect to clean it out. The high amounts of sugar that exist in these harmless- looking sweets, are the mouth’s worst enemy; despite how amazing they can taste. Here is a list of the most harmful candy for our teeth and overall dental hygiene. Be sure to brush and floss after enjoying these!
Even though cake is not technically candy, unless you count cake pops from Starbucks, cake is one of the sugariest treats on the planet. The loads of sugar that go into making a single cake have the potential to destroy your oral hygiene. Candy corn and cookies also fall under the high- sugar content category that can wreak havoc on our tooth health. After eating any one of these goodies, make sure to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly; if you neglect to do so, you will form cavities in no time at all. Especially candy corn, when it comes to floss, those can stick to the tiny and minuscule crevices in the mouth and teeth.
Sticky and chewy candies are the absolute worst for our dental hygiene. Gummy bears, worms, sharks, pretty much any type of animal, can do serious damage to our teeth if we do not brush, rinse and floss them out. The sugary deposits that the leftovers leave in our mouth create cavities and before we know it, we have a mouth full of decay. Dried fruit is another sneaky treat that can ruin our teeth, even though it sounds healthy since it has the word fruit in it, dried fruit is one of the stickiest substances and is completely made of sugar. Leaving these stuck to our teeth is like throwing a party for the bacteria in our mouths and providing the catering; big mistake. Considering they latch onto every inch of our teeth, the best way to make sure to get them out is with floss; we cannot rely on our saliva in this case.
Sour candy will not only make our faces scrunch up, but the highly acidic content in them will break tooth enamel down very quickly. Just like any acidic foods or drinks, we must wait a half hour to brush after eating these tangy candies. We must be sure to wash away the acidic particles leftover from these because they will combine with the bacteria in our mouths and start to build up plaque almost instantly.
If you have a “too sweet” sweet- tooth and you do not take proper care of your teeth, you most likely do not have great dental hygiene. If we go long enough without getting this treated, it can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. If your sweet- tooth has gotten out of hand and you are losing or have lost teeth, dental implants are a great solution for you. We can replace any missing or unhealthy teeth with a simple procedure.
