Dr. Keith Cooper of San Jose, CA is here blogging today to explain how dentures can destroy oral and dental health, but dental implants can offer the healing of teeth and gum health for years to come. Did you know that dentures can create significant damage in the mouth over a period of years that can complicate or ruin the chances for patients to get dental implants in the future? Here at Contemporary Dental Arts in San Jose, CA we know the real truth behind dentures and want to share with you why these are not the best option for missing teeth.
Dentures can single- handedly ruin gum tissue and even the jaw bone. Considering these devices are removable, each time the patient takes them out of the mouth and places them back in, they lose their grip. When the dentures fit awkwardly in the mouth, they put more stress and pressure on the gums that cause them to loosen and sag. The gum tissue will begin to change color, bleed and eventually recede from the teeth. When the gums sag, it creates open spaces between the teeth and gums that can be very harmful to the oral cavity; this is giving the plaque and bacteria in the mouth an open invitation to under- layers of gum tissue and the sensitive tooth roots. Once the gums have been compromised, the jaw bone is the next victim; when the osseous tissue in the jaw is affected, it can lead to facial deformation, sinkage, wrinkling and reduces the patient’s chances of getting dental implants in the future.
If you are not already aware, the patient must have a sufficient amount, strength, and structure of the jaw in order to get dental implants. If the patient has suffered severe damage to the jaw due to constant neglect they will need to schedule a bone graft, in which the doctor will have to replace the the fractured and damaged osseous tissue with new and healthy bone. This procedure can be quite taxing on the patient so they will need to recover from about 3-5 months in order for the jaw to regain the proper amount of strength to endure the process of osseointegration.
Osseointegration is the process in which the doctor places titanium alloy in the jaw bone so the mouth accepts the dental implants naturally and biologically as real teeth. This part of the process also requires time to heal which generally can last up to 4-6 months; depending on the amount of damage and implants needed.
Once the patient has recovered fully and the process is complete, they will be ready to receive the tooth- colored crowns into the spaces in the mouth. These porcelain caps are directly compared to the patient’s natural teeth in order to ensure the comfort, look, fit, and feel of their new smile. We also take the time to match the exact color of the teeth to achieve a matching row of beautiful and flawless pearly whites.
Dental implants have the ability to reverse dental hygiene damaged by dentures through the protection of the gums, remaining teeth and increase bone density. When the mouth and jaw do not have to stress when chewing with dental implants, it allows the gum tissue and bone in the teeth to heal from the prior damage.
