Dr. Keith Cooper from the Contemporary Dental Arts in San Jose, CA is here blogging today to offer tooth extraction for unhealthy teeth and easy replacement with dental implants to help restore overall oral health again. Do you have one or several unhealthy teeth that you need to get rid of to help restore your oral health? Some of the time, when we neglect our teeth, there are only a few that fall victim to decay and experience a gradual death. If these teeth have not fallen out yet and they are just sort of “hanging around”, we would be happy to help with that. We want to share some important reasons to replace these with dental implants, if you are not already aware of them.
First of all, having one, two, or three unhealthy teeth can lead to decay in others. Chances are you are not just missing these specific teeth on purpose when brushing and flossing; sometimes the plaque can fall between the cracks of certain premolars or molars. Unfortunately, if a few of the teeth are showing black spots, the other ones are most likely not “healthy” either. We must make sure that we are spending the proper amount of time cleaning, flossing and brushing each tooth in every angle we can think of. Since the teeth are organized so closely in diameter, it does not take much for the decay to spread. By removing these unwanted teeth and replacing them with dental implants, you could be working your way toward a better overall dental and oral health and hygiene.
Now, when you get these teeth removed you must not wait too long to get dental implants put in; the teeth can shift pretty quickly. The success of this removal and dental implant procedure is entirely dependent on how strong the jaw bone is and the level of infection that person is experiencing. Did you know that there are some people that are not qualified to get the dental implant procedure done? These people have neglected their teeth and gums so severely that the jaw bone has deteriorated and no longer has the natural structure and support that it is supposed to maintain. Considering the process of osseointegration, in which the titanium is placed gently into the jaw bone for the dental implants to firmly lay in, the jaw bone must have a sufficient strength and structure. If it is too weak, the osseointegration will not be successful and the dental implants will fail.
These patients, if insistent on getting the dental implant procedure done, must schedule a bone grafting. A bone graft is basically a bone tissue transplant in order to repair and replace the fractured bone with healthy and strong bone. There is a slight recovery period that follows this procedure and depends on the damage to the original bone and how large the area of the mouth was affected; normally it ranges from about 3-5 months though. Once the patient has waited the proper amount of time, they will be ready for the dental implant procedure.
The procedure itself takes a few months because of the process of osseointegration; it takes our jaw bones normally about 4-6 months to let the titanium embed itself in there and settle gradually. This biological and ancient process is the best solution for missing teeth considering what open gaps in between the mouth can do to the mouth and overall health of a person. Once the patient has healed and kept the mouth and teeth clean, they can have the tooth- colored crowns placed in the spaces to finish a beautiful and complete smile.
One of the most amazing parts of dental implants, besides working to restore better dental health for years to come, is the fact that the teeth are exactly sized up and matched to the natural teeth making it impossible to tell the difference between the two. No one but you and us will know that you even have them in, and your bite will improve that much more with a full set of teeth; just like you used to have.
