Dr. Keith Cooper is here blogging today from San Jose, CA to explain the specific process of dental implants and how they can be beneficial to patients for years to come. Here at Contemporary Dental Arts, we believe that it is very important that you understand the steps and benefits of dental implants. Dental implants are the perfect solution for someone with a missing tooth or teeth; these can help to restore overall oral and dental health for years if taken care of well.
The first step to dental implants is scheduling a consultation at Contemporary Dental Arts. We need to determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for this procedure by examining your jaw bone structure. If there is a significant amount of damage due to neglect of dental health, you will need to schedule a bone graft before you are able to get dental implants. The bone graft is basically a bone tissue transplant that helps to rebuild the lost tissue and the recovery period after this procedure is normally 3-5 months; to make sure the jaw heals properly. See our Bone Graft Info page to learn more.
If you have initially qualified as a candidate for the procedure, the doctor will start the process of osseointegration, in which titanium is gently embedded into the jaw bone to ensure the fit and grip of the dental implants. You will also need to recover for a few months after having this done, normally the period is 4-6 months to make sure that the jaw heals properly so the dental implants will be successful.
Whatever strict instructions your doctor gives you regarding what to eat, drink and how to clean, must be followed. Your success rate of the implants will directly reflect how well you follow the directions. Obviously it is smart to eat soft foods and always make sure to floss and brush appropriately. Chewing any substances that are too hard could ruin the process of osseointegration and could ruin your chances completely for getting the implants.
Finally when you have recuperated the proper amount of time, you will be ready for the actual dental implants. The doctor will place the tooth- colored and natural crowns in the mouth and you will be ready to smile at the world again. This is the easiest step, but as we stated earlier, if you do not follow the correct instructions, there is a chance that the implants will not be successful. In that case, you wasted all of that recovery time and money on something that did not work; we do not want this for you. We want to be able to complete that partial smile and give you the confidence you deserve again with younger looking teeth.
One of the great things about dental implants is the convenience; you never have to remove them or worry about losing them like you do with dentures. You can chew and drink better with them and there is no pain involved. You may even have a stronger bite with dental implants than you did with your regular teeth; especially if you were missing one or more teeth.
We go out of our way to make sure that the teeth fit well and look completely natural by matching up the color and contrast compared to the actual teeth. When we size them so that they fit in the mouth, we also take your facial dimensions into consideration to make sure that your smile looks as perfect as it feels.
Not only will you feel more confident but you will even appear to be more confident and youthful. A worn down and tired appearance of teeth has an effect on how old we actually look; younger teeth give you a younger presentation.
