Dr. Cooper from San Jose, CA is here blogging today to educate us on the dangers of ice hockey and how players that suffer facial injuries can benefit from dental implants. Ice hockey is the fastest team sport in the world. We know more than anyone how dangerous the game of hockey can be, as dedicated Sharks fans, we have seen it all. Whether it is from a practice or an intense game, players are throwing other players into the glass and on the ice over and over. Pucks are flying, punches are thrown and whistles are blown constantly. This exhilarating and unique sport results in some of the worst dental emergencies the world has ever known. Even our own Joe Thornton took one to the mouth in practice last year and had to receive some dental work. We are proud to say that here at Contemporary Dental Arts, we are big Sharks fans and are always available to help.
Did you know that the sport of ice hockey did not start out as it is today? In 1800 some Canadian college kids started a game called Hurley, with wooden sticks, pucks, and goals. This eventually formed into the professional, high- speed, constant chase- of- the- puck we call ice hockey. At the time they did not think of face masks, helmets, or pads to protect their bodies, faces and mouths; luckily the NHL has required protective equipment throughout the evolution of the great sport to secure players’ safety.
Whether it is a stick- check, puck to the mouth, slam against the glass, dive on the ice, or even a fist to the face, hockey will never cease to pull you to the edge of your seat. One common injury in ice hockey is concussions, which are blows to the head that can knock the players unconscious and cause brain injuries. An extensive study released in July concluded that in recent seasons the NHL has been averaging 5.23 concussions or suspected concussions per 100 games (or an average of just over seven 136 games). When athletes are struck anywhere in the head or face, chances are that they can suffer severe dental injuries along with that; such as missing teeth, broken teeth, or even broken jaws. There are so many different ways players can hurt each other and themselves in this game; we personally would never get out on the ice with those vicious Sharks.
Dental implants are the perfect solution for ice hockey athletes; they solve the problem by replacing the missing or dented teeth that have taken hit after hit in the games. A fall to the ice does not mix well with our dental appearance, but did you know that professional athletes are advised not to get any cosmetic work like porcelain veneers done until the end of their careers? This makes sense because they would keep getting these fixed after every single injury; spending a fortune. However, the beauty of dental implants in this case is that they are meant to keep the teeth healthy. Yes, they will help with the appearance of your teeth but they are meant to save dental hygiene overall instead of looking pretty.
