When I began my blog, I wanted a platform where I could educate my readers and get them passionate about their dental health. I also wanted to get the community engaged by talking about local events and businesses.
Within the last 50 years or so, San Jose’s economy has undergone a lot of changes. As the “Capital of Silicon Valley,” it’s rapidly transitioned from a farming and agricultural community to a sprawling urbanized metropolitan area.
Sometimes transitions like this can be difficult for cities, causing them to lose sight of the local businesses that provide character and diversity to the area. By supporting local businesses, you can keep our city vibrant and thriving. This is Dr. Keith Cooper, and we’re going to switch topics over the next few blogs, so that I can shine a spotlight on the businesses that make our community great.
When you want a coffee, it’s easy to end up at a Starbucks, where you can order one of the many mass-produced items on their small menu. The barista at Starbucks might sullenly take your order, spell your name wrong on your cup, then half-heartedly tell you to have a nice day. You can avoid this by going to a small business. Independently owned businesses tend to have more passion when it comes to delivering their product and services. One storefront in San Jose that exemplifies that passion is the coffee and pastry shop, Hannah Coffee and Sweets.
The owner of Hannah Coffee and Sweets has no shortage of culinary experience. Hannah Sim graduated from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and interned at the Palace Hotel focusing in pastries. She worked at Sugar Butter Flower in Sunnyvale for 3 years, before going on to starting her own business in 2009. Through all of her training, Hannah is still inspired to come up with new recipes and experiment esthetically with her cakes. All of her culinary experience shows in her restaurant.
When it comes to preparing amazing food, Hannah Coffee and Sweets pays keen attention to detail. Every dish and drink look like an artistic masterpiece and tastes even better. Even though Hannah specializes in sweets, her menu has its fair share of savory items. In fact, last time I went in, I ordered a savory item.
I got a smoked lox sandwich and a latte. The sandwich came with a fresh green salad and a small cupcake on the side. Everything about my meal was fresh, delicious, and filling. The lox wasn’t too smoky or salty, and the cheese on the sandwich added a richness to the texture. Thinking about it is making me hungry again! My latte was skillfully crafted with intricate artwork in the foam. It looked almost like a neat lattice pattern. Besides being pretty, it delicious too. It wasn’t too acidic or sweet.
The atmosphere is a calm and quaint, where you don’t have to worry about being rushed out of your table. The pricing was fair. I was highly impressed with my dining experience. One disclaimer I should make is that parking can be irritating. However, the food and service at Hannah is worth circling around for a parking spot.
Are you hungry yet? Good. Try this great local establishment. Don’t forget to rinse with water after the coffee, though. This will help avoid staining and decay from the acidity of the coffee.
Stay tuned into my blog to learn about more local spots in San Jose that make a positive impact on our community.
